Commonwealth to Declare Statewide
“Motorsports Week”
Harrisburg, PA--The United States Motorsports Association (USMA) will host the Pennsylvania Motorsports Legislative Summit & Rally on Tuesday June 13, 2017 at the State Capitol in Harrisburg. Race track owners, promoters and racing related businesses are scheduled to attend, where they will be meeting with their legislators and promoting the benefits of motorsports for Pennsylvania. In addition to the USMA Summit, Representative David M. Maloney, Sr. (Chairman of the PA Motorsports Caucus) has introduced a resolution designating June 10th through June 17th as "Motorsports Week" across the Commonwealth. “Pennsylvania is the 4th largest state in the nation for number of race tracks including over 540 racing events taking place annually and home to nearly one-hundred businesses that rely on the racing industry,” said Rep. Maloney. “For example, a study by East Stroudsburg University found that Pocono Raceway contributed $257 million to the income of Northeast residents, created 2,700 new jobs and generated $23 million in local, state and federal tax revenue in 2013 alone. Motorsports are enjoyed by millions of Americans and it is an economic boom to Pennsylvania that should be embraced by policymakers.” The USMA is conducting a national study of motorsports called the Motorsports Impact Report. The report has uncovered over 8,700 vehicles in the state used for racing competition. This does not include race cars competing in the state from other parts of the nation, such as the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) event held in September at Maple Grove Raceway. Nearly half of the tracks are dirt oval with motocross facilities coming in a close second. PA Motorsports Week kicks off with the NASCAR races at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond. Williams Grove Speedway, which opened its doors in 1939 in Mechanicsburg, will host a major USAC sprint car race mid-week. PA Motorsports Week will conclude with the 41st running of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross race at High Point Raceway in Mt. Morris. Several tracks around the state will be hosting their local and state public officials during Motorsports Week. As one of the original 13-Colonies Pennsylvania has a rich American history. The state recognizes racing’s significance as part of this history. Motorsports is also identified as a major economic driver for the future contributing millions in positive economic impacts, primarily to smaller rural communities.
